UFC color commentator and podcast host Joe Rogan is a firm believer in the optimum functioning of the body. Rogan is a martial artist himself and knows the importance of proper fitness routines and the correct supplementation to maintain a physically and mentally sound body. However, one of the most crucial aspects of maintaining the human body’s efficiency happens to be sleep.
Over the past few years, Rogan has discussed that he struggled to get proper sleep. The 56-year-old had been dealing with sleep apnea for years which had drastically reduced his sleep quality. Sleep Apnea is a disorder that causes you to stop breathing while asleep and prevents a healthy restful sleep.
This condition is common among athletes and bodybuilders as more muscle mass around the neck can close off the airway when asleep. To counteract these symptoms Joe Rogan used a mouthpiece that kept his tongue falling back on his throat. This prevents him from snoring and waking up in the middle of the night due to lack of air.
While most sleep apnea-affected people use the CPAP machine, using the mouthpiece made a world of difference for Joe. “I don’t snore at all, before it was awful I also choke,” said Rogan. Due to the lack of snoring and choking in the middle of the night, the color commentator affirmed that his wife is also less worried and happier.
With Rogan being an active advocate of sleep apnea his podcasts on the issue have helped many. However, the 56-year-old also changed a person’s life by personally giving him advice on sleep apnea.
How Joe Rogan’s advice on sleep apnea changed a passenger’s life
Despite being a very fit individual, Joe Rogan faced sleep apnea, a disorder that leads to poor sleep quality. Due to sleep apnea, the affected can become more irritated and have less energy throughout the day. Apart from that a bad sleep cycle also has several adverse effects on one’s physical and mental health.
Sleep apnea is very common among powerlifters, bodybuilders and obese people due to excess mass or fat that restricts that pathway of air while asleep. Being an advocate for sleep Apnea, the podcast host has revealed his struggles and how he was able to overcome them by using a mouthpiece. The 56-year-old is not shy talking about it and once even helped a random passenger.
During one of his flights, Rogan found that a relatively obese person was choking in his sleep. Due to this, he had to jostle out of his sleep to catch some air. After witnessing the incident Joe made the person aware of the issues he’s been facing.
Although the said person had no idea about sleep apnea, Joe advised him to get it checked out. He even took out his handy mouthpiece that helped him recover. “I’m like let me tell you what’s going on and I showed him my mouthpiece. I said you got to go to a doctor get that checked out it’ll change your life,” said Rogan.
While a mouthpiece did the trick for Rogan, many have to use a CPAP machine every night to get undisturbed sleep. Regardless, it is a life-changing experience and getting proper treatment makes a huge difference.
