The coaches have not been announced for the upcoming 31st season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). But it seems like Tony Ferguson is out to change that. The former interim lightweight champion revealed that he was offered a TUF coaching role and even asked to pick the coach for the opposing team.
These revelations came our way only a day after Conor McGregor began reminiscing about his own TUF days. If Tony is to be believed, the Irishman will be reprising his coaching role opposite El Cucuy in the 31st season of TUF. Ferguson revealed that Khabib, his first choice, wasn’t an option so his next pick was The Notorious One.

It seems Urijah Faber fans will have to put a pin in their hopes of seeing a TUF 22 sequel. Under Conor’s wistful post, fans went crazy after Faber egged on McGregor to take up the coaching role on TUF. The fans proclaimed their desire to see Conor and Faber coach against each other again. After all, their TUF rivalry was one of the most exciting ones on the show.
A brief history of Tony Ferguson and Conor McGregor’s feud
Conor McGregor was not El Cucuy’s first choice to coach against him on TUF. And that’s because of the bad blood that exists between the two UFC stars. The feud between them started when Conor became the UFC lightweight champion after beating Eddie Alvarez. At that time, Ferguson was riding a pretty respectable winning streak and he expected a title shot.
However, as we all now know, Conor never defended his lightweight title. Instead, he went over to boxing and fought Floyd Mayweather, simultaneously cashing in the biggest check of his life. During this, back in the UFC, Tony Ferguson was furious by Conor’s refusal to defend the lightweight champ and he began calling for McGregor to “defend or vacate”.
In late 2017, Tony fought Kevin Lee for an interim lightweight title. And shortly after Tony’s win, Khabib Nurmagomedov became the undisputed champion after their fight fell through. Subsequently, Conor vs Tony was also forgotten with time.
Everyone knows what happened next with the shenanigans of UFC 229 and Tony losing his win streak and his aura to Justin Gaethje in a brutal war. It seems like a TUF season is just the thing to reignite this rivalry.
