Colby Covington is going to fight Kamaru Usman at UFC 268 this weekend for the second time. Their first fight didn’t go in favor of Covington as he lost that fight via KO in the fifth round. However, he was the only fighter in the welterweight division who was able to give a commendable fight to the undisputed champ Usman. Colby fought two rounds in that fight with a broken jaw in that fight.
This Saturday if Covington wants that belt, he has to perform extraordinarily. For which, Colby believes he is ready. Since his loss against Kamaru, Colby has only fought once. But, a noticeable narrative going into the fight is the change that Colby made in terms of his fight camp. Colby knew that in order to get a different result he can’t keep on doing the same thing. So, he moved out from American Top Team following disputes he had with fighters like Jorge Masvidal, Dustin Poirier, and Amanda Nunes.
Colby is now part of MMA Masters that is run by Cesar Carneiro and Daniel Valverde. “It’s not about a team, it’s not about anybody else, it’s just about me,” Covington said about what changed in his fight camp after he moved out from ATT. He believes the improvement in his games is a result of the undivided attention he is getting from his team.
“They have helped me to understand timing, help me to understand reflexes, and get my head out of the way. Before I didn’t move my head. I just went straightforward trying to put forward my cardio on guys and break them. Now we are using that energy wisely. I have seen the best of me that i have ever seen.”
According to him, his timing and understanding of reflexes have improved since he joined MMA Masters. Earlier he used to go straight trying to put forward his cardio on guys and break them. But, now he is being cautious of how to use his energy wisely.
The loss against Kamaru Usman made Colby Covington a better fighter:
The Chaos defeated Tryon Woodley dominantly to get his second title shot. In that fight, a clear change in his style was visible. While many thought that after that destructive defeat from Usman, it would be hard for Covington to perform at the same level. However, he proved all wrong as fight fans could clearly see the improvement in his game. That dominant victory made everyone realize that This “Chaos 2.0” is much more dangerous than the previous. With a team solely focused on him and more importantly a team that loves having him, it makes things simpler for the fighter.
