Tennis legend Roger Federer returned to Shanghai for a special occasion on Friday. Federer was felicitated by the organizers of the tournament, as he has a long history at the event. Andrey Rublev thought Roger’s presence was a boon for him, as all eyes were on the Swiss ace instead of him. This left him free to play his natural game.
Federer returned to Shanghai amidst much fanfare as he was bestowed the title of ‘Icon Athlete.’ It was a truly lovely gesture, and it was hosted just before Rublev locked horns with Ugo Humbert for a spot in the semifinals.
When the Swiss maestro took his seat on the bleachers, the crowd erupted, which got a smile out of Andrey. The Russian player quickly realized that Federer had distracted the crowd. It worked out in Andrey‘s favor because it meant he could play freely. He even brought it up during the post-match interview, “They were watching only Roger!”

Rublev and Humbert met for the second time in China this month. Humbert had won their last encounter in Beijing, and Andrey had a score to settle with him. However, Rublev was absolutely ruthless, as he defeated Humbert 6-2, 6-3 in straight sets.
Andrey has had a decent year so far and will look to carry on in that vein in Shanghai. He is also very close to qualifying for the ATP Finals in Turin.
As for Roger Federer, his popularity has not diminished despite being retired. The reception he got in Shanghai yesterday is a testament to his glorious legacy.
