Novak Djokovic has always been a polarizing figure within the tennis fraternity. He has often found himself in the middle of controversies, but none bigger than the COVID-19 vaccine scandal. It has been nearly two years since that unfortunate incident, and Djokovic finally shared his opinion on the subject.
In 2022, the Australian government deported Djokovic from Melbourne due to his unvaccinated status. Djokovic had thus found himself in the eye of one of the biggest storms he had encountered in his career. He was steadfast in his decision, though, even if it meant he could not play at various tournaments. Djokovic even had to miss the US Open since the US had stringent international laws during the pandemic, but he did not budge.
There was a lot of name-smearing, as journalists and fans alike labeled him as an ‘anti-vaxxer.’ However, Djokovic recently revealed that he is not against vaccines; rather, he is pro-choice.
Novak Djokovic told @jon_wertheim about his position on COVID-19 vaccines: “I’m not anti-vax. Nor I am pro-vax. I’m pro-freedom to choose.” pic.twitter.com/rZoAGx10as

The Serbian spoke with Jon Wertheim, one of the most famous tennis journalists at present. During the interview for 60 Minutes, Novak asserted that he only exercised his freedom of choice. Djokovic admitted that, in addition to being “pro-vax,” he was also “pro-freedom to choose.”
Since this interview surfaced online, fans have been furious with the media. Many have lashed out for not allowing Novak to explain his stance earlier. One user hoped that the journalists who crucified him would apologize, and another pointed out, “Look at what he sacrificed for it.” Here are a few reactions to the interview.
Jon Wertheim and his friend and colleague Ben Rothenberg were two prominent journalists that were pushing the fact that Djokovic was anti vaccine and certainly didn’t respect his choice.
I wonder if @jon_wertheim now has the class and decency to apologise to Djokovic?

@60Minutes so – so you respect his decision? Look at what he sacrificed for it. When are you going to honestly report on what was done to us with these vaccines?

Why didn’t you guys give him the spotlight to say this when he wasn’t allowed to play?

Novak Djokovic has endured brickbats throughout his career. Despite this, the Serbian has always tried to be as honest as possible, be it for his views or his achievements.
Novak Djokovic makes an honest confession
The world number one player has become synonymous with excellence. He is a highly motivated individual and has no qualms about admitting that he chases records.
Novak does not only play for chasing and breaking records, though. He genuinely loves the sport and has broken several records in his efforts to be the best.
“I mean, for me, that’s completely normal. Like, being honest about it and being your authentic self, and expressing what you feel. I’m just trying to be true to myself and to others and say what my goals and objectives are. So it’s as simple as that,” he said (via Tennis-Infinity).
Novak Djokovic has always been honest about his drive, even if he has had to field criticism for it. His determination has seen him win 24 Grand Slam titles after all.
