Daniil Medvedev about his iconic US Open win celebration
Medvedev had made his grand slam debut at the 2017 Australian Open. Two years later, he reached his first major final at the US Open while losing to Rafael Nadal. In 2021, he lost to Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open; in the same season, Medvedev defeated the Serbian at the US Open final. It was a landmark victory as Djokovic lost in straight sets at a grand slam for the fourth time in his career.
The victory gave Medvedev his first grand slam title and made sure his celebrations were special. After winning the final point, the 27-year-old fell to the ground with his tongue out. He was imitating a “dead fish” and was inspired by the act while playing FIFA. He mentioned it by saying, “All legends will understand, all i did was an L2 plus left,” which was the control of the move he did.
“Seules les légendes pourront comprendre. Ce que j’ai fait après le match est “L2 + Left.”
