Dutch soccer player Quincy Promes used to be one of the underrated forwards in Europe until just a few years ago, but since then, his career has flipped on its head. The 31-year-old went from being a star on the rise to a criminal on the run. And the player is now known more for his criminal indictments than his abilities on the pitch.
The forward played for numerous clubs in Europe, including Sevilla, Twente, Ajax, and most prominently, Spartak Moscow. Promes’s career hit its peak during his first spell in Russia, as the Dutchman scored 59 goals in 115 appearances. His final season with Spartak ended with him winning the Russian Premier League Player of the Season honor.

Numerous clubs from the continent took note of his talents, and Promes ended up signing for Spanish side Sevilla in 2018. Following a lackluster spell in Seville, the Netherlands International returned to his home country to play for Dutch giants Ajax.
The forward got off to an excellent start at Ajax, as he won the Dutch Super Cup title during his debut for the club. Promes continued to be a consistent performer, but it didn’t take long for matters to get turbulent. The trouble began in December 2020 after the player was detained under suspicion of a stabbing incident.
As per the authorities, Promes had allegedly stabbed his cousin in the knee during a family gathering, something to which he reportedly alluded during a wiretapped phone call with his father. Due to the questionable legality of the wiretapped call, the charges imposed on him were downgraded. And the case currently awaits its conclusion, with June 19th being the deadline for a court ruling.

The stabbing incident wasn’t Promes’s only indictment, as the former Ajax man has also been prosecuted for smuggling cocaine into the Netherlands. As per the Dutch Prosecution Service, the 31-year-old attempted to import 1.3 metric tons of cocaine in two batches. The narcotics were said to be worth at least $75 million. During his final year at Ajax, Promes had a salary of more than $2 million annually.
What happened to Quincy Promes?
After finding himself on the wrong side of the law, the forward quickly jumped ship and returned to Spartak Moscow. Leaving the Netherlands was likely a calculated move on the player’s part, as he has managed to evade Dutch authorities. With no extradition treaty in place between Russia and Holland, Promes currently roams free. And he didn’t even bother showing up for the opening trial of his case back home.
As for his career, Promes has effectively picked up where he left off in Russia. The player is currently the highest-scoring foreign player in Russian Premier League history, and he is also Spartak’s best scorer even in the RPL.

At Spartak Moscow, Quincy Promes earns a weekly wage of around $49,000, which amounts to nearly $2.6 million annually (as per Salary Sport). The forward’s contract likely includes some neat bonuses that further increase his overall earnings.
