The soccer world was flabbergasted after a shocking match between Wrexham Red Dragons and the US Women’s team. The fans probably took a moment or two to rub their eyes in disbelief after seeing the scoreline. In what was an extremely lopsided match, Wrexham defeated the National team 12-0. However, one of the star players of the women’s side, Heather O’Reilly seems to ignore the defeat.
While a 12-0 defeat would crush the soul of any soccer player, for Heather O’Reilly, that’s not the case. Despite the embarrassing defeat, O’Reilly still feels proud of her team. The former USWNT star said, “We’re super proud. What’s the worst that could happen? We lose 16-0 to Wrexham? We don’t care because we’re living, we’re being bold and we’re being brave.“

Although there has been confusion regarding the players who featured for US Women’s team. While several have claimed that the team consisted of USWNT players, that wasn’t true. The team included a mix of present and former USWNT stars like O’Reilly, Kristine Lilly, and so on. The side also had uncapped goalkeeper Lindsey Harris, whose efforts saved US Women’s team from suffering further embarrassment.

Not only the US Women’s team but Wrexham also had some retired soccer stars on their side. Former Swansea star Lee Trundle even scored four of the Red Dragon’s 12 goals. The Ryan Reynolds-owned team further featured players like current Wrexham backup goalkeeper Mark Howard and former Manchester United player Liam Grimshaw.
Wrexham Red Dragons missed out on $1 million despite winning 12-0
The match between Wrexham Red Dragons and the US Women’s team was a part of The Soccer Tournament. The Soccer Tournament (TST) is a tournament that was organized in North Carolina by TBT Enterprises, who also established The Basketball Tournament. Featuring 32 teams, TST was a seven-a-side soccer tournament that was played in June this year.
The TST featured several innovative rules such as the ‘Target Score Time’. Some other rules of the tournament included the absence of offside, indirect free kicks instead of throw-ins, and the prohibition of sliding tackles and dropkicks by the goalkeepers. The winners of the TST were also awarded a cash prize of $1 million.

Despite winning against the US Women’s Team with a score of 12-0, Wrexham Red Dragons failed to win the tournament as well as the $1 million. The Welsh team lost in the round of 16 against Conrad & Beasley United, a team consisting of ex-USMNT stars Jimmy Conrad and DaMarcus Beasley. The inaugural edition of the TST was won by Newtown Pride FC, who also took home $1 million.
