Lionel Messi has finally opened up after the historic night in Qatar last year. Messi led Argentina to their third World Cup title in December last year, defeating France on penalties. It was a huge milestone for Messi as well, as he finally won the only title missing from his trophy cabinet. Recently, Messi gave his first interview after winning the World Cup.
Messi recently appeared on the Argentinean show Perros de la Calle, where talked about his experience in Qatar. Messi revealed what went through his head on the day of the final, his experience with the national team in the past, and more. The Argentine talisman also explained his famous “that’s it” gesture towards his wife, Antonella Rocuzzo, after winning the final.
Messi said, “Why did I say ‘that’s it’ to Antonela? Because it was over, after so much time, so much suffering. There were times when I suffered a lot with the national team, many disappointments, lost finals… I received a lot of criticism, of all colors. And my family suffered much more than me. It was closing the circle: we won the Copa América, the World Cup. That’s it. There’s nothing left.“

Messi was asked if he had anything to say to his younger self. The PSG star replied, “If I had to, I would tell my 16-year-old self that something extraordinary awaits him. He is going to have a very beautiful path, with hard moments that he’s going to overcome. Never give up on his dreams because in the end, he will have his most desired reward.” Messi also said that to date, he still gets emotional whenever he sees any clippings of his World Cup glory on social media.
Lionel Messi promises to get a new tattoo after World Cup victory
Lionel Messi also revealed in the interview his intentions on getting a new tattoo after his World Cup win. After Argentina’s Copa America triumph in 2021, Netflix released a series titled, ‘Sean Eternos: Campeones de America,’ which documented Messi and Argentina during their Copa America campaign. In the documentary, Messi revealed. In that documentary, Messi spoke about getting a tattoo of the ‘Five of Cups’ done.
As per El Mundo, the tattoo that Messi committed to was actually a particular card in a Spanish card game. Messi revealed that his teammates, Rodrigo De Paul and Papu Gomez, had come up with a game where the players had to guess their cards before revealing them. Messi said, “Rodri and Papu were just messing around, telling them to guess the cards or whatever.“
However, the odds of guessing the cards were really difficult, being only one in fifty. The Argentine players came up with the superstition that if the players guessed at least one of their ten cards, then Argentina would win the Copa America. Surprisingly, three of the Argentine players who were playing the game had managed to guess their cards. During Messi’s turn, Messi chose the ‘Five of Cups’ card, and he, too, managed to guess it correctly.
