An old comment of FC Barcelona star Ferran Torres about Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland has recently resurfaced on the Internet. Since arriving at FC Barcelona, Torres has established himself as a crucial member of the squad. Torres has been head coach Xavi’s first pick in the team, even in place of Robert Lewandowski at times. However, Torres’ old comment from a few years ago has made him a source of ridicule.
In an X (formerly known as Twitter) post shared by @ManagingBarca, Ferran Torres made a bold claim back in 2022. During an interview, Torres claimed that he could compete with Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe. He said, “Haaland and Mbappé? I think that I can compete with them, I know how far I can go.” While there’s no denying Torres’ talent, the fans believe that the Spaniard has wildly overestimated himself.

Last season, Ferran Torres scored four goals in 33 appearances in La Liga. To put things in context, Erling Haaland scored a mammoth 36 goals in 35 appearances in the Premier League. Meanwhile, Kylian Mbappe scored 29 goals in 34 league matches in Ligue 1. The fans believe that Torres doesn’t fall under the same bracket as Mbappe and Haaland.
One fan even went on to say, “Bro was just living in his own dreams.” Nevertheless, Torres has managed to improve his performances, scoring four goals in just 18 appearances. However, he is still behind Haaland, who has scored 14 league goals in 15 appearances for Manchester City, and Mbappe, who has 18 goals in 16 Ligue 1 matches for PSG this season.
FC Barcelona coach Xavi downplays the rumors of signing Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland
Over the last few weeks, Kylian Mbappe’s future at PSG has been once again the subject of controversy. Several clubs have been linked with Mbappe, including Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Liverpool FC. However, FC Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez has cleared the air about the club’s stance on potentially signing the French star.
Xavi admitted that FC Barcelona doesn’t possess the financial capacity to accommodate the signing of Kylian Mbappe. It has been a tough few years for the Catalan giants with their ongoing economic crisis. Concerning the problems, Xavi has stated that signing players like Mbappe or Erling Haaland is highly unlikely. He said, “Unfortunately, we are not in a privileged situation economically to do that.“
