David Beckham has been a legendary figure in English soccer. The 48-year-old was one of the most prolific players to ever represent the Premier League club Manchester United. The veteran midfielder made his international debut for England in the year 1996.
The Argentina international Lionel Messi had one of the most important stints in his club career with La Liga side FC Barcelona. The 36-year-old played 17 seasons at the club, rising from their youth system. However, as per reports, there was a certain hint of fortune behind Barcelona’s number ten becoming one of the most magnificent players at the club.
Soccer enthusiast and on-air host Cams reportedly talked about the piece of fortune involved in the rise of Leo at Barcelona in one of his social posts. He stated that Barcelona went for Ronaldinho because their deal for David Beckham fell through. The presenter further inflicted – “Ronaldinho was on the verge, 48 hours away from signing for Manchester United”.
Cams expressed that as United failed to get hold of Ronaldinho, they signed Cristiano Ronaldo. He said – “I will probably say in that instance Real Madrid probably lost there”. Cams termed the reason behind his saying as his belief that Beckham is not as good a player as Cristiano or Ronaldinho.
He stated that United nurtured the talent of CR7, and Barcelona ended up getting Ronaldinho, who as per him made more impact at Barca than David would have. Cams inflicted that Ronaldinho “transformed” Barca. The important thing according to him was Ronaldinho going on to provide Messi an assist in helping him get his first goal and nurturing him making Leo the player he is today.
Fans can infer that Ronaldinho played a huge role in Leo’s rise at FC Barcelona, and if Beck hadn’t gone to Real Madrid, Barca wouldn’t have signed Ronaldinho. Consequently, his bond with Lionel at Barca might not have happened, which proved to be a blessing for the club.
David Beckham on Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo rivalry
The former English international reportedly stated that – “Messi is alone in his class as a player”. The 48-year-old expressed that it is “impossible” to find another player like Argentina’s number ten. Becks is currently also the co-owner of Leo’s MLS club Inter Miami in the U.S.A.
The veteran further stated – “He (Cristiano Ronaldo), who is not at his (Leo’s) level, are both above the rest”. The Manchester United legend also recalled an incident of playing against Lionel. The Englishman inflicted that at one stage in his career, his then team PSG was leading against Barca in their backyard.
He opined that then the Argentinian came on and “changed the match” as Barca scored. David left United in 2003. Cristiano Ronaldo went on to receive his number seven shirt at the club. Many great players, over the years, have given diplomatic answers to the whole CR7-Leo rivalry thing. But, it seems like Becks had his opinion sorted out.
