Anthony Gordon has impressed with his performances for Newcastle United in this Premier League season. The 22-year-old has changed the attacking dynamism of the Toons ever since his arrival at the club. Newcastle signed the winger from their fellow league rivals, Everton.
Since joining Newcastle in January 2023, Anthony Gordon has scored seven goals and assisted five in his first 39 outings for the club. His dribbling ability combined with his sheer pace, has given the Toons an outlet whenever they come up against any of the top six sides in the Premier League.
However, the player suffered an injury scare in his team’s 1-0 win over Manchester United. He was deemed to have a hip-related problem by Newcastle’s manager Eddie Howe. Gordon himself netted the only goal of the match. Later the reports revealed that the winger suffered a ‘hip tightness’ issue.
However, Anthony recovered from it and participated in the Toon’s mid-week Champions League clash against AC Milan. He was withdrawn by the club’s manager after an hour into the game. Nothing came out as a concrete reason behind his substitution in such a crucial stage of the match.
However, Ben Dinnery (a soccer journalist) implicated the current status of the winger on one of his socials. In the post, it has been depicted that the young player would be assessed by the club’s medical staff. It also included the statement of the club’s manager Eddie Howe.
Eddie has stated – “He (Gordon) said he had an awareness of something in his hamstring”. The manager insisted that they were not quite sure if it was an injury. The player “could still sort of play, but couldn’t play at the very high level that he has played for a long time”, he further said to have expressed. However, Newcastle fans would hope that the winger soon gets back to his best and full fitness.
Performance of Anthony Gordon for Newcastle United so far this season
The 22-year-old English forward has scored a crucial tally of six goals in 15 Premier League matches this season for Newcastle United. Also, a majority of his goals have come against the so-called top six clubs in the top flight of English soccer.
He has further registered five assists to his name in this season’s Premier League outings so far. The player also played six UEFA Champions League matches, and two EFL Carabao Cup games for his club in the 2023-2024 season till now.
Despite his failure to score in these eight matches, he has pretty much led the front line of the Toons. Gordon possessed a continuous attacking threat for the opposition’s defenders. His numbers didn’t quite reflect the importance of his on-field enigma for the Newcastle team. The club’s hierarchy would hope that he continues to deliver key performances for them at the highest level.
