Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas has already established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the court. Tsitsipas has made incredible strides since his debut, collecting silverware as he went. He is motivated to give his best at all times. Tsitsipas’ motivation comes from a personal place, as he recently paid tribute to a very special person.
The Greek star has become a household name owing to his dashing good looks and exploits with a racket. He is a talented player, and it is not surprising, given his family history. Stefanos comes from a long line of athletes on both sides of his family. However, his grandfather represents the pinnacle of sports.
Stefanos’ grandfather was an iconic soccer player who won the Olympic gold medal for the USSR. The Greek player recently took to social media to honor his grandfather, Sergei Salnikov’s, legacy.

While Stefanos plays a different sport than his grandfather did, inspiration transcends boundaries and generations. He has always acknowledged his grandfather’s greatness and tried to make him proud.
Who is Sergei Salnikov?
Sergei was a soccer star who played for notable teams like Zenit Leningrad and Spartak Moscow in his career. He played for the USSR national team that won the Olympic gold in 1956.
Salnikov lived a full life, even if he suffered under the regime. When his stepfather was arrested in 1949, Sergei tried his best to have him transferred to an ordinary prison from the labor camp. In order to facilitate this, he moved from Spartak to Dynamo Moscow. With Dynamo, he won the Cup in 1953 and the Soviet Top League in 1954.
When his stepfather was out of danger, Sergei moved back to Spartak. With his team of choice, he won the League again in 1956 and the League and Cup double in 1958.
Salnikov also played in the World Cup in 1958, where the national team made it to the quarterfinals. The soccer legend retired from the sport in 1960 after scoring 138 goals for his club and country.
Stefanos Tsitsipas has a special way of honoring his grandfather
The Australian Open holds a very special place in Stefanos’ heart. He made it to the finals of the tournament for the first time in 2023 before losing to Novak Djokovic. Moreover, Tsitsipas also enjoys the support of the local Greek community.
Melbourne is not his favorite just for his personal achievements, though. In 1956, Sergei won the Olympic gold medal at the soccer arena next to Melbourne Park. Stefanos has dedicated every match he played at the Australian Open to his beloved grandfather.
“For me, winning the Australian Open would mean everything, mainly because my grandfather won the Olympic medal in 1956 in Melbourne at the football arena that’s 50 meters from Melbourne Park. Every match I play there I dedicate to him and, honestly, it pushes me to want to show something more and play well in Melbourne,” said Stefanos (via Tennis Tonic).
Stefanos Tsitsipas has established himself as a prolific player in recent times. Even though a Grand Slam title evades him, he has the skills to do so. If he wins the Australian Open, it would be the best tribute to his grandfather.
