Patrick Beverley recently shared a bold take on the Boston Celtics. The point guard has been around several successful organizations in the past. So it is safe to say he understands what teams truly need to participate and win a title. The Celtics have been extremely close to winning a title several times in the recent past. In 2022, they made the finals but lost against the Golden State Warriors.
Patrick shared his take on the Pat Bev Podcast and mostly criticized the iconic Celtics duo. He claimed that Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown would not be able to win a title by themselves. He claimed that they were too similar and didn’t complement each other’s game. “They don’t complement each other enough … they complement each other, but not enough,” he said.

From a statistical point of view, Patrick Beverley is absolutely right. Both players have very similar tendencies offensively and defensively. Last season, Tatum averaged 30.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game. Brown was much more dialed down averaging 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. In terms of shooting percentages, they’ve produced fairly similar stats. Brown and Tatum have very similar approaches in their games, except that one leads and the other follows.
Patrick Beverley claims Kristaps Porziņģis will give the Celtics a boost
But this wasn’t the end of Patrick Beverley’s take on the Celtics. He held high regard for Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown as they consistently show immense potential to be league leaders. Although, the 35-year-old believes that breaking up the duo won’t solve the issue. He said that the Celtics should instead trade for better pieces to complement both of them.
“You don’t get rid of anything. You just add. You add a defensive point guard, you add a 3-and-D guy… With Porziņģis, you guys will be a lot better,” Beverley said. Boston recently signed Kristaps Porziņģis to a pretty solid deal. The Latvian big man previously played for the Washington Wizards where he averaged 23.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game last season. Known as an injury-prone player, Porziņģis showed that he was capable of staying healthy under the right circumstances.

However, the European star recently revealed that he was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis. He pulled out of the Latvian roster as he was supposed to play for them during the 2023 FIBA World Cup. However, this puts the Celtics in trouble if he does not recover properly.
