Marcus Smart is a long-time Celtics player, as he’s been part of the franchise since his rookie year. Drafted in 2014, Smart was the sixth overall pick, selected by Boston. As a rookie, Marcus put up promising numbers off the bench, though he did start in quite a lot of games.
His performance heavily improved throughout the years, with his role having more importance on the floor. Smart is a great defensive player as well, holding the 2018 DPOY award.
Smart has not missed a playoff appearance since his rookie season. The Celtics have been a contender for a long time, though have only made the Finals once in the last 10 years of postseason appearances. Marcus Smart has been a crucial part of the team ever since.
The Celtics finally made their Finals appearance after eight years, facing the Golden State Warriors. For Smart, this postseason run was special as he dedicated it to his late mother.
Camellia Smart wanted to see Marcus Smart with green hair
Born on March 6th, 1994, Marcus was the son of Camellia and Billy Frank Smart. Marcus has three older brothers as well. His mother loved his hair and all the different hairstyles he had. Marcus had once dyed his hair blonde and had braids as well. Camellia Smart passed away in 2018, which did have an effect on Smart’s game. In the 2018-19 season, Smart wasn’t playing at his best, though he still managed to play 80 games in the same season.
He bounced back the following season and was on track with his game. Boston had an incredible postseason run in 2022. Smart dyed his hair green, dedicating the postseason run to his late mother, who always wanted to see her son dye his hair green.
“She always said she wanted to see me in green, but obviously she passed away so she never got to see me, so. When we started this playoff run, I was like, ‘You know what, for her, I’m gonna go ahead and dye it, see what it looks like.’. Everybody loved it. So now, it’s kinda here,” said Smart.

Though the Celtics lost the Finals to the Warriors, their following season was also a defining year. Smart and the team made it to the Conference Finals yet again but fell short against the Miami Heat. Smart has now been traded to the Grizzlies, involved in a three-team trade, as his incredible run with the Celtics has finally come to an end.
