Before coming to the NBA, Scottie Barnes made his path through high school and college basketball. In his early years, Barnes played for Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach, Florida. Even as a freshman, he showed his talent by leading his school to a 19–8 record and the 5A regional semifinals. His skills were recognized with the All-Area second team and MaxPreps Freshman All-American honors.
After completing his education at Cardinal Newman, Barnes moved to NSU University School in Fort Lauderdale, where he had the opportunity to play alongside the highly-ranked Vernon Carey Jr. During his sophomore year, he helped the team to an impressive 36–2 record and secured their first ever Class 5A state championship.
Following that, Barnes joined Montverde Academy, where he teamed up with top-tier recruits Cade Cunningham and Day’Ron Sharpe. Barnes’ team dominated on the court and received praise from analysts as one of the greatest in high school basketball history. Throughout this period, Barnes maintained an average of 11.6 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.
