Dwyane Wade pondered back on an uphill battle with Gabrielle Union that nearly put a halt to their marriage. Wade spoke about having to disclose the break in their marriage and that he had fathered his son Xavier with Aja Metoyer in an appearance with Shannon Sharpe for his podcast show Club Shay-Shay. Wade claimed that he decided to call it quits on their relationship in 2013, thinking it would be in their mutual best interests.
“I tried to pussyfoot around it, I tried to break up with her,” Wade explained to Sharpe about Union. “Hey, things have been bad lately: ‘Hey, we’ve been having a little distance in our relationship anyway,’ I tried all of that. She kept showing up”. Wade geared up to discuss a difficult topic with the Bring It On star about having a child with a woman who wasn’t his wife. (h/t via TMZ)
The NBA Hall of Famer claimed that despite the difficult time taking place throughout the playoffs, Union’s encouragement was integral in getting him through it. The couple got officially engaged in December 2013 and tied the knot in August 2014. After years of infertility hardships, they were finally fortunate to welcome their child, Kaavia James Union-Wade, in 2018 through the utilization of surrogacy.
Wade has a son and a daughter, Zaire (21) and Zaya (16), with his ex-wife Siovaughn Funches, and Xavier (9) with Aja Metoyer, “It hasn’t been perfect, it will never be perfect, but that was nine years ago,” Wade confessed about their prior relationship issues. “We go to therapy, we’ve had shouts about it, we’ve had regular conversations about it, and so it’s been something that going to be something that I have to work at and work on.” He added, “It doesn’t go away because years come or because I say ‘sorry!”
Even though everything worked out well in the long run, the couple and their family had to cope with an upsetting scenario. Given the flow of time, Dwyane stated that he and Gabrielle still keep coming to blows over the issue.
Dwyane Wade makes an honest admission about Gabrielle Union marriage
According to Dwyane Wade, competing in the NBA Finals was relatively simpler than revealing to Gabrielle Union he was expecting a child together with somebody else. The point guard admitted to having a son with Aja Metoyer in 2013. Despite rumors, the basketball player insisted in statements made at the moment that he and Union had decided to take a break. Nevertheless, he claims that the exchange of words was strained.
Wade revealed to Sharpe that he really was terrified during the most difficult phase in his life and that the arrival of his baby had an enormous influence on his relationship with Union. Dwyane claimed that it was “way harder to have a conversation with my now-wife” when Sharpe questioned whether conveying the news was a greater challenge than competing in the NBA Finals that season. Wade highlighted that Union and he had not tied the knot yet and that their nuptials didn’t take place until August 2014.
“Dwayne Wade, was it harder to tell Gabrielle Union that you’re having a baby with another woman or losing the NBA finals?”

“I mean, you’re thinking about it. All right. It’s all scary. The whole situation is scary enough…And no matter what people say outside or what people think, it’s like, ultimately, like you got to sit with you. You got to sit with this person, this woman you’re gonna be with, right? And I had to sit with my wife about this. Well, my now-wife about this,” Dwayne said.
The couple passed through a difficult phase but still stuck to each other’s back. Dwyane Wade always talks about Gabrielle as how she always stuck to him despite all his wrongdoings.
