As the NBA season approaches, sources close to the NBA have hinted at a possible blockbuster trade between the Phoenix Suns and the Portland Trail Blazers. Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro has sparked new trade rumors by suggesting that the Suns may express interest in acquiring Blazers’ center Jusuf Nurkic to Phoenix, particularly if Damian Lillard exits Portland.
Deandre Ayton has been the main topic of trade talks in Phoenix for two consecutive offseasons. Previously, the Suns seemed committed to keeping their young star. However, if Nurkic enters the trade market, Phoenix may reconsider its stance. According to Gambadoro, the Suns would be eager to explore such a deal. The assumption behind the potential Ayton-Nurkic swap is that a Damian Lillard trade will happen soon, likely within the next day.
“If Nurkic was on the table I would be surprised if the Suns didn’t look into it because an argument could be made that is an upgrade for Phx,” Gambadoro wrote. “This would be contingent on Dame being moved. Portland has previously shown no interest in DA but that was with Dame staying. If they do not have Dame on the roster they could very well want a young 25-year old to build around. Vogel needs a defensive minded Center to build his defense around and Nurkic does fit that mold. This would be contingent on a Lillard trade and I expect do expect that to happen very very soon.”
Portland’s initial doubts towards Ayton could shift in a post-Lillard scenario. The young Ayton could present the Blazers with a fresh starting point, especially if they choose to pair him with the talented Scoot Henderson.

Both players have three more years on their respective contracts. Nurkic is expected to earn from a four-year, $70 million deal with the Blazers, while Ayton will receive $32.5 million for the 2023-24 season.
How will Jusuf Nurkic help the Phoenix Suns?
In the quest to their lineup, the Phoenix Suns, who recently acquired Bradley Beal from the Washington Wizards, could find a strong ally in Jusuf Nurkic. The experienced center could be a valuable addition, but how would he fit into the Suns’ plan?
Last season, Nurkic has averaged 13.3 points, 9.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists, demonstrating a solid presence both offensively and defensively. Meanwhile, Ayton, despite facing criticism for his postseason performance, recorded 18.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, showcasing his capabilities as an effective two-way player.
Nurkic’s defensive prowess could be exactly what Phoenix needs. His ability to defend, securing crucial rebounds might improve the Suns’ defensive dynamics.
With the Phoenix’s training camp will start on October 3, NBA fans are eager to witness how the Suns’ roster develops.
