The latest performance by Luka Doncic at the 2023 FIBA World Cup has greatly impressed the basketball community. As many NBA fans should certainly be aware, Doncic is not from the United States. He is originally from Slovenia and was likely glad to put on his national uniform once again as his team attempts to win the FIBA World Cup.
Although they still have a way to go before winning the entire tournament, Slovenia undoubtedly got off to an excellent start thanks to the high level of play displayed by Luka Doncic in their game against Georgia. His moves were so impressive that Slovenia’s head coach had high praise for his young star.
With that being said, let us take a closer look at what Donicic managed to accomplish in his most recent game. Additionally, fans might also want to know what his coach had to say about him.
What did Luka Doncic do for Slovenia at the 2023 FIBA World Cup?
Basketball fans were certainly impressed with the most recent performance by Doncic in Slobenia’s matchup against Georgia. To those who do not know, Doncic finished that game with a statline of 34 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. His impact on the game also played a huge role in crushing Georgia with a final score of 67-88.
Having Luka on the court against relatively unknown players showed the basketball community the levels of this game. He seemed nearly unstoppable at several stretches and was able to keep his team comfortably in the lead. Especially when it seemed like Georgia was about to cut down the lead.
After watching Doncic put on a show and help his team win Slovenia’s head coach Aleksander Sekulic was interviewed and asked about his young star. Here is what he had to say about Luka’s abilities.
“Luka took matters into his own hands, especially when they were switching on him. He felt that he could play against their bigs, so we took advantage of this. The most important thing in this situation is that all five players were on the same page helping Luka, and in the end, they were getting open shots because of him… So the advantage with Luka, what we have is this versatility. We can attack different defensive setups and alignments, and that’s how we try to attack each team. We try to read what they do and to attack their weaknesses.”
I asked Slovenia coach Aleksander Sekulic about the offense using Luka Doncic’s ability to punish mismatches to break the game open in the second half against Georgia.
