The NBA has witnessed a couple of incredible career/season games in the past weeks. Suddenly, the Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown became a huge topic of interest for allegedly “dropping 77” in a recent game. We can all agree that players are capable of scoring as much as that at any given time, especially Jaylen.
Based on recent events, more players have been recording career-highs in scoring. Joel Embiid recorded 70 points which was followed by Luka Doncic’s 73-point performance. Following Doncic’s outburst, Devin Booker recorded a season-high 62 points. Fans also added that Brown dropped 77 as one person said, “Crazy NBA week, Luka dropped 73, Embiid dropped 70, Jaylen Brown dropped 77. insane.”

Other fans chimed in saying, “Don’t forget Jaylen Brown dropping 77,” and, ”Jaylen Brown dropped 77???????” While most fans are probably wondering when it happened, it never did. This is a running joke on social media that originated after Jaylen Brown played against the Dallas Mavericks on January 22, 2024.
Jaylen Brown dropped No.77 Luka Doncic
Yes, this joke was taken quite literally and as expected, went viral within no time. The Celtics took on the Mavericks while Embiid and the other two players had their elite moments. During this game, Luka Doncic guarded Jaylen Brown during a play while the Celtics were in possession. Brown put Doncic on skates, dropped him to the floor, and drained the shot attempt. Doncic’s jersey number is 77, which fans used to base the joke on.
Unfortunately, Jaylen did not have a 77-point performance. However, if it were true, it would have been the second-best scoring night since Kobe Bryant recorded 81 points in 2006. It would’ve meant that he recorded the fourth most points in a single game besides Bryant (2) and Wilt Chamberlain (1)(3).
Jaylen Brown recorded a career-high 50 points in 2022
Even though Jaylen Brown did not score 77 points, it does not mean he hasn’t had an impressive career night before. Brown has proven himself to be one of the better scorers in the NBA. While his role has been reduced over time, the 3x NBA All-Star has been the Celtics’ top scorer on various occasions. During the 2021-22 season, Brown scored 50 points against the Orlando Magic.
During that game, he also recorded 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal. He shot 65.5% from the field on 29 attempts and nailed 5 three-pointers as well. However, during the following season, Brown averaged a career-high 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. Jaylen is yet to achieve an All-Star Starter selection but chances are that he will soon receive the honours of being one.
