Jamirah Shutes fell for sports’ most feared emotion, anger. Over the years, several athletes from all across the world have always had heated moments. Some would simply be a short disagreement involving an exchange of words. Most times, these incidents don’t result in severe brawls of any sort. However, other times, things get a little too out of hand and players start throwing fists at each other.
The Memphis Tigers guard may have lost her way through her athletic journey and ended it before it began. Last month, Jamirah Shutes suited up with her going up against Bowling Green. Unfortunately, the Tigers took a severe beating and lost the match against them. Shutes, as usual, tried her best but finished with 13 points and a couple of boards. The upset turned into a night of disaster when both teams met to greet each other.
Why was Jamirah Shutes charged with assault?
When both teams met to shake hands, Jamirah Shutes and Elissa Brett of Bowling Green had an exchange of words. Whatever was said had Shutes sucker-punch Brett in the face. The truth behind this incident is unknown. Even though these things happen often, Bowling Green and Elissa decided to press charges on the Tigers player. They even released a statement about the incident.
It said, “The Bowling Green State University Police Department has charged a member of the Memphis Women’s Basketball with assault. Violence is never acceptable and our priority remains the health, safety and support of our student-athlete, who is recovering and doing well.” This was followed by, “This is an active investigation in conjunction with the City of Bowling Green Prosecutor and no further comment is available at this time.”
Since then, the Memphis Tigers have remained silent and choose not to comment on the issue unless the ongoing investigation gets done with. So far, fans have been enraged over the fact that Jamirah has not admitted her mistakes. She pleaded not guilty and failed to apologize to Elissa and everybody around her. Fans even urged her to be chucked off the roster.
Jamirah Shutes is still considered a great player for the Memphis Tigers. She ranks 13th all-time in scoring and still continues to put on a great show despite being on the shorter side. However, her actions will have severe consequences if she chooses to deny her wrongdoing.
