Fans might be startled to hear that even Stephen Curry went through an incredible amount of self-doubt and frustration prior to joining the NBA. As we all know, Curry is the star point guard for the Golden State Warriors and has been a cornerstone of the dynasty that the franchise established over the last decade.
Since he has 4 NBA championships to his legacy and is also widely acknowledged as the greatest three-point shooter that the game has ever seen, one would assume Curry had some unreal talent even before making it into the league. However, he revealed that this was not the case back when he was younger. Fans will certainly want to know more about what Steph went through during his early years.
Stephen Curry felt frustrated after losing in the AAU national championships
Although Steph is considered by many to be one of the best players in the league, his journey to the NBA was not considered easy by any stretch of imagination. This would make sense since he wasn’t very tall or strong, to begin with. Moreover, the fact that his father Dell Curry used to be an NBA player created an innate sense of pressure and expectations on Steph when he was just 13 years old.
He revealed that a loss in the Amateur Athletic Union championships frustrated him to a greater extent. Especially since neither he nor his team stepped up to the occasion and performed. That led to him feeling a sense of doubt and confusion about how to continue moving forward toward his goal.
“I had finally gotten the chance that I’d been waiting for, all year, to measure myself up…. and I fell short. Way short. It really felt like a wake-up call. It felt like this moment of truth…Where there was only one possible lesson to take away: that I just wasn’t good enough… Like, I wasn’t being a hothead. I wasn’t mad at losing. I was just…… down. I was in my turtle shell.”
One can only imagine how Steph felt after falling short of his goals and not performing at the expected level. Since he had the pressure of having an NBA player as a father, he truly felt a sense of inferiority and frustration over losing.
Now that many years have passed since then, there is no denying that Curry has overshadowed his father’s legacy with his own. However, none of that might have happened if he hadn’t dealt with several setbacks and challenges along the way.
