Jamal Murray is one of the notable guards in the league. The 26-year-old has made a name for himself after playing at his best while just returning from his injury. Murray was drafted as a 7th pick by the Nuggets in 2016. Along with Nikola Jokic, Murray led the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA championship and quickly became one of the best duos in the NBA.
Jamal isn’t exactly someone who was born on the States’ basketball soil. The Nuggets star was born in Canada to parents, Sylvia and Roger Murray. Being one of the top players in Canada, Murray committed to the University of Kentucky in 2015.
Is Jamal Murray Jamaican or Canadian?
Murray grew up in Kitchener, Ontario. His father, Roger Murray was born in Jamaica and moved to Canada when he had turned 9. Jamal’s mother, Sylvia Murray also moved to Canada at the age of nine, being originally from Syria. Looking at his background, Murray is Canadian-Jamaican and his religion is still unknown. Jamal has never mentioned anything about his religious practices.
The Nuggets’ guard has played professionally in Canada as well. Jamal has been an exceptional player, with his game only improving. In contrast to other international players, Murray meets the criteria of the standards of the NBA by playing in North America beforehand.
While players outside North America don’t find it easy to fit in the league, some of the international players were made for the NBA. Jamal Murray is one of them as well as others like Luka Doncic.
Murray is easily the top Canadian player in the NBA among Andrew Wiggins, Shai Gilgeous Alexander, Dillon Brooks, and more. Alongside Jokic, Murray has managed to push his team to new heights right after his arrival. Jamal will definitely be an All-Star soon, though it will be interesting to see whether he’ll win the championship ring again.
