Simone Biles struggles with ‘the twisties’
Simone Biles always had anxiety during competing in the event, as she told Today referring to it as ‘having butterflies‘ in the stomach. But at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, it got worse. Biles became so overwhelmed that during the event, she felt like she was going to pass out.
The Olympian talked about having immense stress and pressure as a world-class athlete. Because of this, she suffered from “the twisties” right in the middle of her performance, which made her lose track when she was in the air doing the twists and flips. The twisties is a state where a person feels a mental block.
This forced Biles to pull out of the final events at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. “I have to focus on my mental health and not jeopardize my health and well-being. We have to protect our minds and our bodies and not just go out and do what the world wants us to do,” she said.
When asked how the Olympian overcame the “twisties,” she responded, “A lot of trust in my coach, my teammates, myself – most importantly – coming into that gym and making sure I’m doing those numbers, the repetitions, feeling confident in them.”
There were times when she felt like nothing was going to work but she pushed herself and made her believe that he had to give herself another day. She showed up and put in all her efforts, and in the end, everything worked out just right. As she made the record-breaking comeback in the U.S. Championship, the legend feels more satisfied and confident with herself.
