Rob Marshall, who currently serves as Red Bull’s chief engineering officer, plans to step down from his position and begin afresh with McLaren’s outstanding technical leadership team. He will use his years of expertise to support McLaren’s innovative approaches in his next position as technical director for engineering and design. Marshall has been a critical member of Red Bull for the previous 17 years, and he will officially leave the team on January 1 to take on his new role at McLaren.
Marshall will directly answer to the revered team principal, Andrea Stella while collaborating closely with Peter Prodromou, the technical director for aerodynamics, and David Sanchez, a soon-to-be addition from Ferrari, who will serve as the technical director for car concept and performance from January onward.
What was Rob Marshall’s role in Red Bull?
Interestingly, Marshall’s relationship with Red Bull began in 2006 when he was hired as head designer. He then worked closely with famous designer Adrian Newey to assist and design the championship-winning cars that Red Bull used from 2010 to 2013. He then rose to the position of chief engineering officer in 2016, furthering his position as an authority in the industry, and holds a notable 25 years of experience.

Marshall’s hiring, according to team president Stella, is a crucial step for McLaren and fits in well with their desire to resume their winning ways. Stella acknowledged the recent stagnation in on-track competitiveness and reaffirmed the team’s unrelenting commitment to reversing this pattern. The crew has recently been strengthened by McLaren, who has taken a complete approach that focuses on people, experience, and technological advances.
Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, appreciated Rob Marshall for his essential services to the team over the past 17 years. Horner went ahead and said, “His work on the generation of cars that gave us four incredible championship doubles between 2010 and 2013 was truly outstanding.” Christian Horner emphasized their gratitude for Marshall’s dedication and wishes the best for him in his new endeavor, despite the fact that his departure will likely leave a vacuum.

For the 2023 Formula 1 season, McLaren stands in sixth place in the constructors’ standings. They recently earned their second double-points finish of the year at the Monaco Grand Prix, which was a fantastic performance. The team, however, is committed to reclaiming its prior standing at the top of the pitch. Unfortunately, they met more difficulties because they missed their development goals over the winter.
