Recently, the world bid farewell to one of its greats. Former NFL player and actor Carl Weathers passed away on February 1, 2024, aged 76. Known for his iconic contributions to the Rocky movies, many were left touched by the news of his passing.
Over the years, Weathers had made numerous appearances in Hollywood, garnering him a lot of fame and recognition. Notably, he portrayed the role of Apollo Creed in the first four ‘Rocky’ movies. Similarly, other notable works include his role as Colonel Al Dillon in the 1987 ‘Predator’ movie. As of 2023, Carl had made a name for himself as Greef Karga, in ‘The Mandalorian’ TV series.

Naturally, his passing was a difficult one to take for loyal fanbases from the projects he worked on. As such, many other Hollywood actors, such as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger took to social media to pay homage to their deceased comrade. According to reports, Carl’s family revealed that he had departed for his heavenly abode peacefully in his sleep.
Was Carl Weathers really a boxer?
As mentioned previously, Carl Weathers was renowned for his portrayal of Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies. Serving as the the main antagonist in Rocky and Rocky II, and later becoming a supporting protagonist in Rocky III and Rocky IV, Weathers inspired many with his performance. Based on the real-life legendary boxing champion, Muhammad Ali, his striking performance lives on in the minds of viewers even to this day.
Owing to his captivating performance as Creed, many have often wondered whether Carl was a boxer as well. However, as it turns out, prior to his role in the Rocky movies, Weathers had no notable boxing experience. Despite his hulking 6 ft 1 ½ ins, 200-pound frame, and remarkable skills it is a surprising thing for many.
As it turns out, Weathers would have rigorous, regular training routines to play the part. According to sources, he and Sylvester Stallone rehearsed fight scenes for several weeks in a boxing gym, weeks before the shooting of the movie. Thus, upon its release, fans were able to witness the hard work and dedication both actors had put in.
Carl Weathers’ football career
As many may be aware, Carl Weathers also had a football career before he transitioned to acting. Notably, Weathers began playing college football in 1966. As it turns out, he was a letterman for the San Diego State Aztecs in the late 1960s, and also a part of the team that won the 1969 Pasadena Bowl.
Then, in 1970, Weathers would go on to play in the NFL as a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders. Signed as an undrafted free agent, he played seven matches for the team. Moreover, Weathers also converted into a strong safety before being released in September 1971. Thereafter, he would sign on with the BC Lions in the Canadian Football League (CFL).
Eventually, he left the gridiron for good in the mid-’70s playing 13 games in total for them. During his football career, Weathers simultaneously pursued acting, receiving a degree in theater arts while at San Diego State University in 1974. After numerous roles in blaxploitation films, Carl landed the role of Apollo Creed in 1976, thus kicking off what would be a legendary performance, spoken about for years to come.
