Sean O’Malley is one of the most popular stars in the UFC. The current bantamweight champion is best known for his unique look and his striking skills. Recently, he made an appearance on the Flagrant podcast hosted by comedian Andrew Schulz. During the podcast, they talked about various topics, including Sean’s interest in boxing.
The duo talked about Francis Ngannou vs Tyson Fury and the UFC however, things took a turn when ‘Suga Sean’ started to talk about his boxing plans. “I wish you could go box a little bit and it didn’t have to be a big deal,” said Sean. According to him the current environment in the MMA and boxing scene makes it hard to have cross-over fights.
When Sean O’Malley was asked about a boxing fight with Gervonta Davis, he had an interesting response. “I still want that fight, I’ll get that fight someday,“ said ‘Suga Sean’. Furthermore, he said that he is genuinely interested in a fight with Davis in a boxing ring. However, he claimed that he is not sure if he will fight ‘Tank’ due to a very surprising reason.
According to Sean, the UFC is doubtful about a boxing match with Gervonta Davis. “They have to build themselves up more, they don’t look at him (Gervonta Davis) as a star right now,” said O’Malley. However, Andrew Schulz disagreed with this take, as he felt that ‘Tank’ is a massive PPV star. On the other hand, Suga Sean said that ‘Tank’ is not a star yet, but he is getting there.
Sean O’Malley could be fighting Ryan Garcia over Gervonta Davis
During the podcast, Sean O’Malley mentioned that the UFC feels that Ryan Garcia is a bigger star than Gervonta Davis. “They said Ryan is a star, they said Ryan carried that (PPV),” said ‘Suga Sean’. If Dana White and the UFC feel that Garcia is a bigger star, they will push Sean to fight Ryan Garcia over ‘Tank’.
Furthermore, Sean O’Malley and Ryan Garcia are already engaged in a social media feud, which can act as a build-up for their match. During the UFC 292 post-fight press conference, Sean decided to call ‘Tank’. He said that he “wouldn’t mind knocking out Gervonta Davis” in a boxing match. However, this statement caught the attention of Ryan, who warned ‘Suga’ about his boxing goals.

Ryan Garcia advised Sean O’Malley to stop talking about boxing, as he would just get knocked out. However, this tweet did not sit well with Sean, who decided to mock Garcia for his loss against ‘Tank’. “Like you did or different?” replied O’Malley. This led Ryan Garcia to challenge the UFC Bantamweight Champion to a boxing match.
However, this was not the first time they had an interaction about a potential match. After his win over Petr Yan, ‘Suga Sean’ challenged Ryan Garcia to a boxing match. Furthermore, he talked about this potential matchup during an episode of Impaulsive.
“If we keep winning and become big enough…UFC would be down but it has to be big enough,” said Sean. Furthermore, it looks like the UFC now sees Garcia as a star, and if he can win his next fight against Oscar Duarte, this match can definitely happen.
