Errol Spence Jr. announced that he has undergone cataract surgery. The American boxer took to Instagram to announce his surgery along with a message about his defeat against Terence Crawford. Errol claimed that it was because of his eye injury that he received several blows from Crawford during the bout.
Errol boasted a fantastic undefeated record of 28-0 until he met Crawford at the T-Mobile Arena in Nevada on July 29, 2023. For the first time in his professional boxing career, Spence was knocked out. Crawford achieved the massive feat in the ninth round to keep his undefeated record intact. The 36-year-old holds a 40-0 record including 31 KOs.

Errol took to his Instagram Story to inform his followers about a cataract surgery he had undergone recently. He wrote, “It’s been past due. Sh!t was covering my eye. Why [do] you think I got hit with so many jabs and hooks? Still a great performance by bro [Crawford].”
Many claimed that Errol’s Story sounded like an excuse for his loss. On the other hand, soon after Errol’s Instagram Story, Crawford uploaded a post on X. Crawford wrote, “No comment.” Although there is no proof that Crawford’s post was in reply to Errol’s, due to the timing, it seems like it.

On the other hand, Errol’s rival Yordenis Ugas showed concern for his condition. On X, Ugas wrote, “Wow it’s not easy… get better champ.”
Errol also posted footage of his bandaged eye. For those who do not know, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine, cataract surgery is an “operation [that] involves swapping out the cloudy natural lens of the eye, or cataract, with a new artificial lens.”
This is the second known eye surgery that Errol has undergone. Previously, he had undergone surgery on his left eye in 2021.

In 2021, Errol was set to face Manny Pacquiao in a superfight that could have skyrocketed his already-established boxing career. However, Errol had to back out of the fight just days before the scheduled date as he was unfit to enter the ring.

Errol was diagnosed with a retinal detachment/break. He underwent surgery on his left retina. Errol, however, did not regret missing the biggest fight of his career. “I don’t regret it at all,” Spence told reporters in April, according to Boxing Scene. “Everything happens for a reason… If I would’ve fought him, I probably would have been blind in my eye and lost my career. Everything happens for a reason. I just got to take the punches and roll with it.”
Ugas had replaced Errol for the match against Pacquiao and pulled off a sensational Unanimous Decision win. In April 2022, Ugas faced Errol and the American won the bout via TKO in the 10th round.
