SUMMARY
- Steph Curry lost the 2018 Finals MVP to Kevin Durant.
- Nick Young revealed that Curry was almost in tears after he lost the award to KD.
Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors were one of the most dominant teams during the 2010s, and some believe that they still are. Things have been extremely rough for the team since winning the title in 2022. They made a second-round exit in 2023 and didn’t make the playoffs this year. But this doesn’t put away the incredible things Curry has done for the Bay Area.
During the mid-2010s, Curry was joined by his two confidants and Kevin Durant. Together, they made three straight finals appearances and won two. However, the debate of whether Curry was better than Durant or vice versa came to light during their second playoff run. The Warriors swept the Cleveland Cavaliers for the title and KD won the Finals MVP.
Steph Curry desperately wanted to win the 2018 NBA Finals MVP
While the Warriors made a run to win their third title, Nick Young was also a part of the group. During a recent episode of Gil’s Arena Podcast, Young revealed what happened after Steph Curry lost the 2018 Finals MVP to Durant. He said, “I remember they was neck and neck, KD and Steph. And then Steph had one bad game. KD was hitting. [In the] locker room Steph’s head was down, damn near tears.”

Young was referring to Game 3 of the 2018 NBA Finals when Curry only finished with 11 points shooting 3-16 from the field and 1-10 from deep range. “Man, he wanted to win that b***h. KD was trying to give it to him, like KD won the year before. He was trying to give it to him but Steph couldn’t make a shot. I think he had the lowest he scored in the finals,” Swaggy P concluded. Durant carried the Warriors finishing with 43 points, 13 rebounds, and 7 assists.
The Warriors’ winning the 2022 NBA Championship brought some weight off Steph Curry’s shoulders
However, once Durant left the Warriors in 2019, Steph Curry was left to lead the Warriors all by himself. Unfortunately, his first two seasons without Durant were unfortunate. During the 2019-20 season, the Warriors had the worst record in the Western Conference. The next season, Curry injured himself and missed a massive chunk of the regular season.
But the 2x League MVP ended up leading the Warriors to the finals in 2022 and they beat the Boston Celtics. Curry also won his first and only Finals MVP as well. “It felt amazing only because I knew I didn’t have to hear about it ever again. It was about us winning again, that’s why I was crying on the court. I know for the rest of my life I’ll never have to hear about it again,” Curry said.
Ahead of the Warriors title reign, several experts including their own fans turned their backs on Curry. Nobody believed that Curry could pull off another championship run without another superstar.
