Ever since CM Punk walked his way back to the WWE, fans, including John Cena, have been very curious about his future in the company. With Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 40 lined up next on the WWE Universe’s wishlist, Cena dropped a cryptic post about Punk’s WrestleMania opponent.
John Cena took to Instagram to share a picture that has opened the doors of creativity for the fans. “STONE COLD SHOT THROUGH THE (heart),” the post read. The post wasn’t accompanied with a justifying caption, as in the usual John Cena manner.

Hardly did Cena post the picture, then the creative fans started speculating Stone Cold Steve Austin to be CM Punk’s WrestleMania 40 opponent. His post perfectly timed with the building heat of the future storyline for CM Punk. To date, Punk hasn’t hinted at what his future opponent in WWE would look like.
However, CM Punk has a place for the upcoming edition of Friday Night SmackDown, which will take place in a few hours. A special Tribute to the Troops edition, fans hope that this SmackDown builds up the story for Punk. With John Cena’s recent post, fans are all the more curious to know what lies beyond the surface for CM Punk.
Will CM Punk vs ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin actually happen?
CM Punk vs ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin has been much hyped among fans for their legendary fame. The fans are quite excited to see the epic faceoff, in case it happens. However, there is little practicality as to whether the match would ever take place.
‘Stone Cold’ has been out of WWE’s regular in-ring action since 2003. On the other hand, CM Punk has never had a long career break. This has enabled him to stay in touch with the industry and its workings. However, with their age difference and the ability to put up a much-awaited fight, the chances of a feud are quite bleak.
“I don’t think Steve Austin is going to be the new Undertaker just because Steve Austin is just as old as The Undertaker,” Booker T said in the ‘The Hall of Fame‘ podcast. He shed light on the age of Steve Austin and asked the people to be “realistic” in building their expectations. However, WWE follows the ideal of ‘Never Say Never’ leaving the fans with the hope of the match.
