SUMMARY
- Cody Rhodes is scheduled to face Roman Reigns for the Undisputed Universal title at WrestleMania 40.
- According to rumors, the WWE Universe feels that The American Nightmare is going to become the new champion at The Show of Shows.
WrestleMania 40 is just days away now, and heading into the event, Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns is arguably the most highly-discussed feud. The American Nightmare is going to challenge The Tribal Chief for his Undisputed Universal title on The Grandest Stage of them All, and he looks set to finally finish his story.
Rhodes has already faced numerous obstacles on the road to WrestleMania XL, and before his match against Roman, he’ll have a huge challenge on Saturday. On Night 1 of The Show of Shows, Cody will team up with Seth Rollins to take on Dwayne Johnson and Reigns, and there’s a major stipulation in place for this bout.
As per the rules, if The American Nightmare’s team loses this tag team match, then the Night 2 main event will be “Bloodline Rules.” Even though this might make this even more difficult for the fan-favorite star, fans believe that he’ll still become the champion at the show. But Cody’s rumored WrestleMania 40 victory may not be best for business, and here are the reasons behind it.
Cody Rhodes’ win might make his character stale
Ever since Rhodes won the 2023 Royal Rumble match, the WWE Universe has been backing him to reign supreme in the Stamford-based promotion. When Cody challenged Roman Reigns at last year’s WrestleMania, fans believed that he’d be dethroning The Bloodline Leader, but that didn’t happen, as the company had other plans for The American Nightmare.
Even though Cody’s dream of becoming the Undisputed Universal Champion wasn’t completed at the 2023 edition, fans never stopped believing in him. In fact, his loss probably ended up increasing his popularity among the audience. Moreover, his victory at the Royal Rumble 2024 and The Rock’s involvement have made him the biggest babyface in the promotion.
The WWE Universe is supporting Rhodes wholeheartedly to win at WrestleMania XL, but there’s a high possibility that when he actually wins it, he might lose his charm. In fact, Cody Rhodes’ win at The Show of Shows might make his character stale, and that’s why giving him the win at the WrestleMania stage may not be the best decision for business.
Roman Reigns might retire if he loses at WrestleMania 40
The American Nightmare’s rumored WrestleMania 40 victory could be a bad move for his character, but that’s not all. In fact, Cody winning against Roman could even impact WWE in the long run, as The Tribal Chief might retire if he loses his Undisputed title at the 2024 edition of The Showcase of the Immortals.
This has been claimed by none other than The Head of the Table himself, during the recently released A&E Biography: WWE Legends ft. Roman Reigns. In the episode, The Bloodline Leader stated that if he’s not at the top or the number one guy in the company, then he doesn’t want to be here.

In addition to this, Roman’s Wiseman, Paul Heyman, has also previously hinted that there won’t be The Head of the Table without the titles. Due to this, some believe that Cody will probably lose at WrestleMania XL, as the Triple H-led promotion won’t be in favor of losing their biggest star in the form of Roman.
But on the other hand, it also reveals that Reigns might be retiring if he ends up losing his match against The American Nightmare. As The Tribal Chief has been the biggest star in WWE in the last decade, his exit from the company is going to be bad for business. Thus, it remains to be seen what happens at The Show of Shows and if Cody will end up finishing his story at WrestleMania or not.
