Earlier, in 2013, The Rock took CM Punk’s WrestleMania spot. Thus, it seems 11 years later, Cody Rhodes has suffered the same fate as The Best in the World prior to WrestleMania 40.
The Rock took CM Punk’s spot at WrestleMania 29
Previously, CM Punk became the WWE Champion by defeating Chris Jericho at WrestleMania 28. Following that, Punk rose to prominence and gained a lot of popularity among the fans. His supporters even expected that he would mainevent the upcoming WrestleMania, which is WrestleMania 29.
However, soon enough, The Rock defeated Punk to win the WWE Championship at the Royal Rumble 2013. During the same event, John Cena won the 2013 Royal Rumble match. With that, he stated that he would be facing the reigning WWE Champion at WrestleMania 29. While Johnson held the WWE Championship, fans were still hopeful for a main-event match involving Punk.

With that, CM Punk faced Johnson at the Elimination Chamber in 2013. However, he failed to win the title. Moving ahead, the Best in the World also challenged John Cena for his main event spot. With that, the Second City Saint member was taken out of the scenario, and The Rock faced The Leader of the Cenation at the Grandest Stage of Them All.
Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, has taken Cody Rhodes’ spot at WrestleMania 40
Previously, Cody Rhodes won the 2023 Men’s Royal Rumble match. Following that, he went on to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39 in a losing effort. With that, it was certain that a rematch between Roman and Cody was inevitable. Moving ahead, The American Nightmare once again won the 2024 Men’s Royal Rumble match. This led to speculations of Rhodes facing Reigns in a rematch at WrestleMania 40.
However, on the February 2, 2024 edition of WWE SmackDown, Cody stated that he would be facing Reigns but not at WrestleMania. With that, he went on to introduce The Rock, who had a staredown with The Tribal Chief. Later, reports came into the spotlight that Reigns vs. The Rock will take place at the Grandest Stage of Them All.
