The Phoenix Suns and the WNBA's Mercury will be purchased by the billionaire mortgage lender Mat Ishbia for a record price of $4 billion.

The agreement puts an end to Robert Sarver's contentious tenure since 2004, when he bought the Phoenix Suns from Jerry Colangelo, for $401 million.

Ishbia, the CEO and president of the Michigan-based United Wholesale Mortgage, has been seeking NBA and NFL teams recently and finally agreed to buy the Suns and the Mercury.

Ishbia has cultivated relationships with several NBA owners and is well-known and highly regarded within the league office, notably with commissioner Adam Silver.

His background check and the board of Governors’ approval vote are required, but insiders claim that will only be a formality.

Mat Ishbia's brother Justin Ishbia who is also a founding partner of shore capital like Mat, will make a sizeable investment and act as an alternate Governor.

Mat Ishbia said in a statement that she is incredibly excited to become the future Governor of Phoenix Suns and Mercury, as both the teams have tremendously active fan bases.

All of Sarver's interests and also a portion of that of the minority partners will be included in Ishbia's acquisition of more than 50% of the teams.
