Over $1.7 Billion Spent on Football Transfers in New Record

According to FIFA, the teams spent a record $1.57 billion on transactions during the January transfer window, with a record-breaking high number of international deals concluding during that time.

Approximately $230 million more than the previous January window record set in 2018 was spent on transfer fees, totaling $1.57 billion.

In the women's game, there have been 341 transfers that span international borders, which is a 30.2% increase in January 2022 and a new record.

Men's soccer had 4,387 international transfers completed in January, most since the Transfer Matching System was introduced in 2010, according to FIFA's International Transfer Snapshot for January 2023.

With a total investment of $898.6 million, English teams led the list for spending on foreign player transfers in January 2023. France was far behind with $131.9 million, accounting for 57.3% of all spending in the month.

This is the third year in a row that FIFA has released a snapshot of the world's transactions involving both male and female players shortly after the close of the global January transfer window.

In men's football, there were 14.4% more transfers than there were at the same time in 2022 (3,834), whereas the total amount spent on transfer fees increased by 49.4% over what was paid in January 2022. (USD 1.05 billion).

With USD 774,300 spent, the transfer fees in women's football also broke a record. Colombia ranked first in terms of transfers coming in, with 35, while Sweden and the United States both topped the list of transfers leaving, both with 26.
