Lionel Messi’s World Cup Moment “Ruined” With a Black Robe

Lionel Messi lifted Argentina's third-ever World Cup trophy after defeating a resilient French side on penalties at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday.

The Argentine captain was also awarded the Golden Ball award for his magnificent performance in the tournament after netting 7 goals and providing 3 assists for the newly crowned World Champions.

While collecting the World Cup trophy, Messi was given a traditional robe by FIFA president Gianni Infantino and the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani as a mark of honor.

This has sparked a new controversy as certain fans believe that FIFA ruined the Argentine star's big moment by dressing him up in an awkward fashion.

Some fans also said that Messi should've lifted the trophy in the iconic Argentine shirt just like his predecessors Diego Maradona and Daniel Passarella.

The piece of clothing is called the "bisht" which is worn by royalties, dignitaries and grooms on special occasions in Qatar and it was given to Messi as a mark of honor for his contributions.

While the Middle Eastern fans supported the decision, the Western fans blamed Qatar for using sports washing strategies during one of the most iconic sporting moments of all time.
