After missing weight by nearly 8 pounds ahead of UFC 279, Chimaev's future in UFC has been a big talking point.

In a press conference, UFC President Dana White when asked about Chimaev, he said that he is uncertain about the two divisions' flux.

"I'm in the middle...Does he want to make 170 and go for the title at 170 or does he want to go to 185 and go for the title there?", said the UFC President.

At UFC 279, after missing the weight, Chimaev was removed from the main event bout against Nate Diaz and fought Kevin Holland in a catchweight bout for the co-main event.

Chimaev ended Kevin Holland by submitting him in the very first round. This was the Swede's sixth successive win since his UFC debut.

Khmazat Chimeav himself seems to be leaning towards 170 lbs weight class. He recently tweeted that he wants to fight Colby Covington next.

Before his weigh-in for UFC 279, Chimaev said that his doctors told him not to cut any more weight.

After his initial rise in 2020, Chimaev almost announced his retirement from the UFC after suffering from severe Covid symptoms. He was even hospitalised for some time.
