Paulo Costa is among the top UFC fighters and was scheduled to face Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294. However, he had some unexpected twists in his journey as an elbow injury forced him into surgery. The sudden injury caused the Brazilian fighter to withdraw from the highly anticipated fight.
But now, he’s back in the spotlight. He has recently shared updates on his recovery, his return to the octagon, and his take on the UFC parting ways with the United States Anti-Doping Agency.
In a recent interview with Sherdog, the 32-year-old Costa was questioned about Dana White’s decision to sever ties with USADA. And the fighter didn’t hold back as he confessed, “I’ll be happy just if the new organization don’t bother me like USADA used to do. If they don’t, if they stop you…you be not chasing me like USADA did, I’ll be happy”.
To fans who are unaware, USADA’s eight-year partnership with the UFC officially ended in October. It was due to a dispute related to Conor McGregor. ‘Borrachinha’ sentiments toward USADA were far from anything positive.
He recalled an incident where USADA officials showed up at his doorstep at 5 a.m. for three consecutive days. It left him completely irritated. Not to mention, Costa also mentioned he never received the promised USADA t-shirt.
Overall, Costa is all good with the changes. Furthermore, he’s looking forward to a new era with the UFC’s fresh anti-doping organization.
Paulo Costa expresses eagerness to face Khamzat Chimaev ahead of other opponents
Paulo Costa was really excited to fight Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294. Even though he had an elbow injury, he was determined to get into the octagon. But just before the big fight, he got a staph infection and had to have his third surgery, so he couldn’t fight Chimaev.
Now, he’s back and ready to make his comeback in January next year. When he was asked who he wanted to fight, Costa was clear: he wanted to fight Chimaev more than anyone else.
He said, “I don’t have a huge preference, my huge preference is to fight Chimaev. Yes. Go make him chase. I know him. But yeah I think Chimaev go change my first option and then these three guys”.
Costa is open to fighting other opponents, but he really wants to take on Khamzat Chimaev. Chimaev is a 29-year-old fighter from Sweden who hasn’t lost any of his 13 fights.
