The welterweight bout will take place on February 17, 2024, at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. Before his fight at UFC 298, Ian Garry was featured as a special guest on the TNT Sports YouTube channel on their preview show of UFC 298.
Ian Garry defends vile comments against his wife Layla Machado Garry
Among the many things that were talked about in the preview show, one was about Ian Garry’s recent controversies. When asked about how his past 5 months have been outside the octagon amidst the Sean Strickland controversy and the Leon Edwards controversy, Ian Garry talked about the negative effects it had on himself, and his close family.
The Irishman said, “When I sign up to fight, I’m putting myself in that kind of limelight, in that firing range. I have that target on my back. My wife doesn’t; my son doesn’t; my team don’t. You fire at me all you want… That’s okay, I’m in this. I get to go in and punch someone in the face and get rid of it and I get to go in and I can call you out and I can fight you and we can do this.”
He went on to say, “But to attack people’s loved ones and people’s family I feel is real low. I mean, my wife got called a pedophile. No woman in the world who isn’t that deserves to be called that. So, all of that’s been said absolutely has an effect on me and my loved ones and it’s hurtful. And it’s upsetting, and it was difficult to deal with at the time. “
‘The Future’ and his family, especially his wife were targetted by Sean Strickland which blew up to be a huge controversy. He further extended his gratitude towards the people at Chute Boxe for how they accepted him. And shared a bit about his experience with them. Garry called them “absolutely phenomenal” for the way they received and treated him and his family.
Garry says he doesn’t care anymore
Talking furthermore about all the negativity he has had to face in the past few months, the 27-year-old claimed that they had learned something from it. He said, “But we’ve learned from it. Somehow, through all that negativity, we’ve learned to pull the people around us closer. If you don’t eat at my table, I don’t care for your opinion.”

He went on to say that he is surrounded by people who love him and are there with him in his good and bad times. They push him and want him to succeed. Apart from them, he said, it’s the job of others to talk and he won’t be taking any offense from them anymore.
Ian Garry ended the conversation by saying, “I’m being a good human and a good man. And that’s all that matters to me. So if anyone wants to go out there and say anything negative, then be my guest. Because the truth is now, I don’t care anymore. I just don’t care.”
It seems as if Ian Garry has found the right mental balance before his big fight at UFC 298. He has indeed been caught up in many recent controversies. But his new “I just don’t care” type of attitude towards negativity will surely help ‘The Future’ going forward.
