SUMMARY
- Holger Rune caused waves when he appointed Boris Becker and Severin Luthi as his coaches.
- Two months after joining Rune's team, Luthi and the player parted ways due to scheduling conflicts.
Danish player Holger Rune is one of the most talented young players on the tour at present. Rune is often making headlines with his exploits on the court or for changing coaches so often. This time around, it was legendary coach Severin Luthi who got the axe.
The 2023 season was a bit of a mixed bag for the Dane. He began the season on a winning note, but his form eventually tapered off as the season progressed. Rune crashed out of tournaments in the initial rounds, and he desperately sought guidance. He added Boris Becker to his team and followed it up with Luthi, thus completing a remarkable coaching side.
Rune’s collaboration with Luthi did not last long, unfortunately. Just two months after their partnership began, Holger let go of Severin. The player’s mother, Aneke Rune, confirmed the separation and explained that it was due to scheduling conflicts.

Aneke added that they did not want to make a big deal out of it as the timing was not right. “It would be too few weeks for Severin to be able to cover for the continuity that Holger needs,” she said.
Severin had traveled to Australia with the team instead of Boris, who had commentary commitments. Under Luthi, Holger made it to the finals of the Brisbane International before losing to Grigor Dimitrov. Rune’s decision to axe Luthi comes on the back of his disastrous outing at the Australian Open. Holger suffered a humiliating loss against the French wildcard, Arthur Cazaux, in the second round.
Holger Rune will continue working with Becker and Kenneth Carlsen as he flourishes under their watchful eyes. In light of this shocking news, Severin Luthi has finally spoken up.
Severin Luthi comments on his split with Holger Rune
Luthi is an illustrious coach. He worked with Swiss maestro Roger Federer for 15 years, from 2007 to 2022, when he hung up his racket. Under his tutelage, Federer became one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Luthi now acts as the captain of the Swiss team at the Davis Cup.
When Rune appointed Becker and Luthi, it seemed he had hit the jackpot. In less than two months, Holger and Severin have called time on their partnership. Since the news broke, Luthi has finally opened up about the split and agreed with Aneke.
“If you notice this, then I say, we would rather separate now than in six months. I think about things like this carefully, maybe sometimes too carefully,” he said (via Tennis-Infinity).
While Holger Rune’s collaboration with Severin Luthi has come to an end, the Dane will try and build on what he has with Becker and Carlsen. Rune is currently playing at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier.
