Grigor Dimitrov is a Bulgarian tennis professional who has been ranked as high as no.3 by ATP. Though Dimitrov’s career has seen him accumulate eight ATP tour singles titles, he is more renowned for his looks, love life, and the relationships he got engaged with famed personalities.
One such rumored relationship was with Serena Williams, with whom he was seen to be practicing frequently. Though both were speculated to be in a relationship, Serena chose to refrain from validating their relationship publicly. But, later when she disclosed that she had a challenging breakup without revealing the name of the individual, it was quite imaginative with regard to who was the person.
Dimitrov was also one of the reasons, why the rivalry between Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova took an ugly turn. This was due to his concurrent romantic involvement with Sharapova, who was already in a heated tussle with Serena over claims of “sobbing” in her book, which irked Williams. In the same book, Sharapova remarked how she was wooed by Grigor, who is four years younger.
In fact, she confessed that she went to the extent of googling Dimitrov to find out his age. Sharapova remembered telling her coach, “Thank goodness he didn’t exist in my generation’, that would have been dangerous. Dangerously distracting…” The two were involved in conversations before publicly announcing their relationship in 2013 only to be separated two years later.
Serena Williams takes a dig at Maria Sharapova concerning her relationship with Grigor Dimitrov
Maria Sharapova is considered to be one of the fiercest rivals of Serena Williams with their most famous encounter, being the 2004 Wimbledon final. Though Sharapova’s relationship with Grigor was well-known, Serena and Dimitrov were also reportedly dating each other. Knowing that the Bulgarian and Sharapova were together upset Serena and fueled her dislike for the Russian.
This was evident in her conversation with her sister, Venus Williams, which got leaked. In the conversation, she said, “…She begins every interview with ‘I’m so happy. I’m so lucky—it’s so boring. She’s still not going to be invited to the cool parties. And, hey, if she wants to be with the guy with a black heart, go for it…” thus taking a dig at Maria indirectly, for dating Dimitrov.
Serena claimed that crying in the locker room was common and there is more value to it, being a final of Wimbledon. So, she felt that it would have been shocking for her, only if she wasn’t in tears. Not stopping there, the 23-time Grand Slam champion felt that it was as if she was reading a book about herself. Thus, the rift between the two female legends got widened.
