Italian tennis sensation Jannik Sinner had an incredible run in 2023. He truly got a chance to spread his wings and soar this season. Sinner’s rich vein of form saw him reach his best career ranking of world no. 4. The fact that he had his father beside him made his victories seem a lot sweeter.
Sinner found a lot of success on the tour this year. He added several titles under his belt, including his first Masters 1000 trophy at the Canadian Open. However, he peaked towards the last quarter of the year, as he led Italy to lift the Davis Cup for the first time in 47 years.
Jannik has much to be proud of, and his father does too, especially because he has witnessed it firsthand. Johann Sinner joined his son’s team as the cook, and they have been traveling together ever since.
Jannik: “My father worked for 40 years in the kitchen, he started traveling with me from Indian Wells. He likes to cook for the team: it’s his life and I’m happy. I left home when I was 14, we spent too little time together, so we try to catch up.”

Sinner revealed that his father joined his team before the start of the US hardcourt swing. The father-son duo is happy they get to spend quality time together. However, it wasn’t always like this. Jannik confessed that he left home at a very young age and missed his parents. His father took it hard and was depressed often, even when he was in the kitchen.
“My father always liked to work, but in the last two years he was a little depressed, even in the kitchen… He worked for 40 years and I wanted to get him out of that situation a little, so that he could find himself and also to show him how I live,” Sinner revealed after lifting the Davis Cup (via WeLoveTennis.Fr).
Jannik Sinner shares a lovely bond with his parents, and it is evident from the way he speaks of them. His parents have always been supportive of his dreams.
Who is Johann, the father of Jannik Sinner?
Johann is Jannik’s father and has been a chef all his life. He worked at a restaurant in a skiing lodge in Val Pusteria, Italy. Jannik owes his success to his parents, especially his father, who saw the potential in him.
The young Italian loved skiing and seriously considered making a career out of it. However, he found his true calling in tennis. Sinner did not have the easiest journey to get to where he is today, but he had his parents’ support.
Johann met Siglinde at the same restaurant, where she worked as a waitress. They fell in love and got married soon after.
Jannik Sinner had one of the best seasons of his budding career. He has grown as a player this year, and his game has also improved. Sinner will hope to continue in this vein next year as well.
