In sports, a lot of different athletes have come and gone, and only a few have been immortalized in fans’ memories. Soccer stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have changed the game forever. Naturally, people are wont to think they are the greatest athletes to have walked the earth. However, Nick Kyrgios thinks it is none other than Novak Djokovic.
Kyrgios has been away from tennis for almost the entirety of the season due to a spate of injuries. Even though he has not played a competitive match, Kyrgios has not been fully away from tennis. He made a memorable commentary debut at the Nitto ATP Finals earlier this month. And now, he recently appeared on Piers Morgan’s show.
The Australian has appeared in a number of interviews of late, including Mike Tyson’s podcast. While talking to Morgan, they touched upon a variety of subjects, and Kyrgios dropped interesting tidbits of information.
When talking about adaptability, Kyrgios mentioned that tennis is the most unpredictable sport in the world. He mentioned that in sports like soccer or the NBA, there is a stipulated time limit. The duration of tennis matches can range from an hour and a half to four hours.
Kyrgios added that it is the reason that Djokovic is the greatest athlete in the world. “Plans change; you have to be able to adapt. That’s why Novak’s, for me, the greatest athlete in the world,” he said.
Djokovic has previously been called the greatest athlete by many of his colleagues, and Nick is the latest. Novak has achieved what others can only dream of, and Nick Kyrgios’ statement puts it into perspective. There have been many tennis greats, like Roger Federer, but there can be only one Djokovic.
Nick Kyrgios hit back at Piers Morgan for unfair comparison
During the interview, Piers brought up Nick’s viral moment from Wimbledon last year. Kyrgios caused a bit of a stir when he showed up at the press conference eating sushi.
Morgan went on to add that it is not something that Federer would ever do. Kyrgios quickly defended his actions, stating that he could never be as prepared as the Swiss ace.
“But I’m not Roger Federer. You can’t expect everyone to be Roger Federer, you can’t do that, that’s unfair. That’s very unfair,” Kyrgios snapped back at Morgan (via Daily Express).
Nick Kyrgios has gained a reputation for going against convention. He has also stirred controversy with his comments on social media quite often. Kyrgios has been away from tennis but hopes to be back soon.
