The Williams sisters have teamed up with Oscar winner Will Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett, once again. King Richard, which was their previous joint venture, was critically acclaimed. This time, however, they will tell the forgotten story of the Women’s Soccer World Cup in 1971.
Serena and Venus co-produced this documentary, which will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. They partnered with Westbrook Studios again so this slice of history could see the light of day.

“Copa 71’ tells the story of one of the most inspirational and significant moments in women’s sports history,” said Serena Williams. “It’s an honor to partner with my sisters and Westbrook Studios to help bring this magical story to light, which has been buried for far too long.”
This tournament occurred 20 years before the ‘official’ women’s World Cup in 1991. It was organized by the Federation of Independent European Female Football (FIEFF) in Mexico. Unfortunately, FIFA has categorically erased this slice of history.

Venus Williams, who has also championed women in sports said, “When I heard about the 1971 Women’s World Cup, I couldn’t believe this incredible story was erased from our history books.”
“I’m excited to team with my sisters and Westbrook Studios to help elevate and empower fellow female athletes and their accomplishments. And to make sure these women have their voices heard through this inspiring documentary,” she added (via Variety).
Venus and Serena Williams’ partnership with Will Smith
The Williams’ partnership with Will Smith is not a new one. The Oscar winner played the titular role in the biopic King Richard. It chronicled the life of Serena and Venus’ father, Richard Williams.
Richard molded his daughters to be the tennis stars that they are today. His life was so spectacular, it was made into a movie.
Will Smith’s portrayal was so incredible that he won an Academy Award. However, that night will not be remembered for his win. Smith slapping Oscar host Chris Rock took the limelight away from his win.
The Williams sisters have had a long and illustrious career in tennis. But now both of them are interested in venturing into new arenas. Copa 71 marks the second time that they have donned the producer’s cap. This is a testament to the sisters’ talent—they shone on the court as players, and now they shine in the entertainment industry.
