The Davis Cup group stages not only saw the clash of 16 countries but also the clash between players. Stan Wawrinka had spoken about the deteriorating condition of the event. The numbers have gone down in terms of attendance as the players also began noticing the absence of supporters. Along with Wawrinka, John Millman, and Julien Benneteau, they also pointed out the downfall of the Davis Cup.
There were various changes made in the Davis Cup in 2018. Gerard Pique, along with ITF, wanted to change the format of the event in hopes of bringing back the glory days of the Davis Cup. The former soccer player is the founder of the Kosmos company, which invests in sports and media. Kosmos, along with ITF, signed a 25-year-old partnership in 2018, which did not last for even five years.

Since 2019, the Davis Cup matches have been taking place in neutral venues, which can be a major reason for the low turnout. The ITF has confirmed that the same format will be followed next year. Even though they have been criticized for their new rules, ITF believes it can get better. The organization had entered into a legal dispute with Kosmos at the beginning of this year and is running the Davis Cup independently this time.
Novak Djokovic focusing on Davis Cup survival instead of targeting Gerad Pique
Many players have lashed out at Pique’s involvement in the latest format of the game. Novak Djokovic is worried about the survival of the event. He has been playing Davis Cup since 2004 and said it is not Pique’s fault that the standards have gone down. Djokovic said that the Spanish defender only wanted to improve the game through his company’s involvement.
About the ongoing conflict, Djokovic said, “If anyone should be criticised, it is the ITF. The format had to be changed, what happened is that we have gone from one extreme to the other.” He said that the ITF should be responsible at these times as they have the final say in decision-making. The Serbian also understood the neutral venue issue and even thanked the Spanish fans after the match against the Czech Republic.
