Holger Rune had a bright start to the 2024 season. He played at Brisbane International and reached the finals while losing to Grigor Dimitrov. But Rune’s next event was the Australian Open, where he was upset in the second round. He did not wait long before playing in his third event of the season. Rune was seen at the Montpellier Open, but fans noticed a change in him.
The Danish player entered the Montpellier Open with a wildcard. In the opening round, Rune, sporting a new haircut, played against Pablo Llamas Ruiz. Fans began wondering what had caused him to change his look. “Breakup haircuts are never a good idea. Even if just your coach,” said a fan, referring to Rune making constant changes in his coaching team.

Earlier, Rune would usually be seen wearing a cap backward on the court. A fan suggested the same for him, and the fan commented, “He needs to keep the cap on thanks.” The change in style might do the trick for Rune this week in France.

It is the second time that world No. 7 is playing at the Montpellier Open. Last season, Rune reached the semifinals while losing to Maxime Cressy. He will be hoping to reach his second final of the season. Rune is chasing his fifth career title and his first in 10 months. He is the top seed at the Montpellier Open and the only top-ten player at the event this year.
Holger Rune records his first career milestone of the 2024 season
The 14th edition of the Montpellier Open began on January 29th and was the first event after the Australian Open. Not many players were expected to play after the opening grand slam of the season. But it saw Rune make an appearance at the event. He received a bye in the opening match and secured a straight-set victory in the fourth round.
The 20-year-old now has six wins in eight matches this season. With his latest win, Rune recorded his 100th career win on the ATP tour. It has been three years since Rune won his first ATP tour match in Santiago against Sebastian Baez. He has since played 164 matches on the tour and will be looking to cross the 200-match mark this season.

Rune is now three wins away from lifting the title at Montpellier. He will next face Michael Mmoh for a place in the semifinals. Mmoh and Rune will be playing against each other for the first time on the tour. The American will be deploying his speeding forehands against his opponent’s smooth court coverage. The quarterfinals are scheduled to be held on February 2.
