The ATP has taken a monumental stride towards enhancing player welfare with the introduction of ‘Baseline,’ an innovative financial security program poised to debut in 2024 after a three-year trial period. This groundbreaking initiative stands as a watershed moment in the history of the ATP Tour.
Comprising three essential pillars, ‘Baseline’ underscores a resolute commitment to ensuring players’ sustainable livelihoods. The first pillar, ‘Guaranteed Base Earnings’, provides a minimum income threshold for the Top 250-ranked singles players each season. For the 2024 season, these levels are $300,000 (Top 100 ranks), $150,000 (101-175 ranks), and $75,000 (176-250 ranks).
This move empowers players to focus on their game, secure in the knowledge that they are financially safeguarded. The ATP steps in to cover the shortfall if a player’s prize money earnings fall below the guaranteed level. This monumental assurance enables athletes to plan their careers more strategically, channel their energy into their performance, and invest in their support teams.

The second pillar, ‘Injury Protection’, offers a safety net for players ($200,000: Top 100 ranks, $100,000: 101-175 ranks, and $50,000: 176-250 ranks for 2024) who compete in fewer than nine ATP Tour and Challenger Tour events due to injuries. This progressive approach provides financial support during challenging times, allowing players to concentrate on their recovery without the added stress of financial uncertainty.
The third pillar, ‘Newcomer Investment’, extends a helping hand to emerging talents. Players entering the Top 125 for the first time will receive $200,000 in advance of the following season, offering them the means to invest in their development, resources, and teams.
Andrea Gaudenzi, ATP Chairman, emphasized that ‘Baseline’ underlines the organization’s unwavering commitment to players’ careers, fostering an environment conducive to growth and excellence. The initiative promises to create a financial security structure for players, who were previously dependent solely on prize money earnings and endorsement deals, which were few.
How did Novak Djokovic start this revolutionary change?
Novak Djokovic’s relentless campaign to uplift the financial prospects of lower-ranked ATP players sparked a paradigm shift in player welfare, illustrating how legends of the sport could act as catalysts for substantial change. Djokovic’s persistent calls for equitable compensation have resonated far and wide within the tennis community, paving the way for tangible reforms that have unfolded over time.
The genesis of this journey dates back to the inception of the Professional Tennis Players’ Association (PTPA), a parallel body to ATP. It marked Djokovic’s determined commitment to rectifying financial disparities and ensuring fair treatment for players across the spectrum of rankings.

Notably, Novak Djokovic had earlier faced accusations of orchestrating an extraordinary boycott threat during a Players’ Council meeting in 2019, unless prize money was augmented uniformly, on the sidelines of the Australian Open. While he later denied engaging in such discussions, his subsequent resignation as the President of the ATP Players’ Council in 2020 spoke volumes.
This transition marked Djokovic’s ascent into a leadership role within the PTPA, solidifying his steadfast commitment to steering a course for transformation. PTPA had stated earlier, “Tennis players have the right to equitable, percentage-based player prize money, as well as annual player minimum compensation.”
The result of Djokovic’s tireless advocacy has resulted in the groundbreaking initiative by ATP, a comprehensive minimum wage package for players grappling with financial pressures. Djokovic’s pursuit of equitable compensation, supported by principles of fairness and just treatment, stands as a testament to his leadership both on and off the court.
