Danish tennis player Caroline Wozniacki has finally made her long-awaited comeback to tennis. She retired in 2020 and her life underwent massive changes. But she is back on the tennis court again after a long hiatus and back to her old winning ways.
Earlier in June, Wozniacki announced her plans to return to the sport. Caroline played her first match since coming back, at the Canadian Open.
The former world number one was embraced by fans in Montreal. As she was walking out of the tunnel, Neil Diamond’s famous song ‘Sweet Caroline’ was played through the speakers. A kind fan was heard saying, “Caroline, it looks like you never left.”
Cue the song 🎶

The crowd rallied behind her and gave her a big round of applause at the start of the match. Of course, it wasn’t just the fans in Montreal who are happy for Caroline. Fans flocked to Twitter to express their happiness to see Caroline on the court again.

It was an emotional rollercoaster for the Dane, to play in Montreal again, where she won the title in 2010. Not only did she receive a warm welcome from the fans, but she also won the match.
How was Caroline Wozniacki’s return at Canadian Open after 3 years?
This has been a season of comebacks, first Elina Svitolina, now Caroline. The Dane played her first competitive match in over 3 years against Kimberly Birrell.
Wozniacki won the match quite comprehensively, defeating Birrell 6-2, 6-2, to reach the second round of the Canadian Open. Caroline’s shot selection and her movements on the court were very decisive and very precise. It did not look like she had been away for so long.

Wozniacki was very happy with the win. During the post-match interview, she said, “I thought I played well in the first set, you know just finding my rhythm, and then I lost the rhythm a little bit in the second so it was a grind. But I’m just happy that I somehow managed to win that one,” (via Yahoo Sports Australia).
Caroline received wildcards for both Montreal and Cincinnati Open. In the second round, Wozniacki will face the Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova.
It was nice to see glimpses of the old Caroline Wozniacki on the tennis court. A win in her first match is sure to boost Caroline’s confidence. She will hope to keep up the winning momentum.
