Francis Zavier Ngannou is a professional mixed martial artist hailing from Cameroon. Known for his dominant and explosive style of fighting, Ngannou had a rough childhood. He started working in sand mines at the young age of 10 for money and did many other jobs to meet his ends until he finally decided to move to France to pursue boxing.

However, he initially faced adversity there as well. He was jailed for two months in Spain for illegally crossing the border. He spent many days living on the streets of Paris as a homeless person before he met Francis Carmont, who introduced him to Fernand Lopez and the MMA factory.

Francis was a fan of Mike Tyson and initially wanted to learn boxing. However, he was convinced to pursue MMA by Lopez. He lived in his gym and learned MMA there.

Ngannou started competing in mixed martial arts in November 2013 and participated primarily in the French promotion 100% Fight as well as other local European promotions. He had a 5-1 record prior to joining the UFC. His 1 loss came against Zoumana Cisse in 100% Fight.

Francis Ngannou’s UFC career

Francis debuted in the UFC in December 2015 against Luis Henrique and won the fight via KO. He then went on to fight Curtis Blaydes the next year, and he won the fight via doctor’s stoppage in the second round.

Ngannou’s notable wins came against Alistair Overeem in 2017, Cain Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos in 2019, and Jairzinho Rozenstruik in 2020. He won the UFC heavyweight title in 2021 by knocking out Stipe Miocic and then went on to defend the title against Ciryl Gane in 2022. His only unanimous decision losses came against Stipe Miocic and Derrick Lewis in 2018.

However, on May 16, 2023, it was announced that Ngannou had signed with the Professional Fighters League (PFL). According to Francis, PFL’s policy of giving priority to the fighters first is what made him sign for the promotion.
