Shakira’s tax evasion case in Spain
News broke out in July of last year that the “Hips don’t lie” artist has been charged with six counts of defrauding the Spanish government between 2012 and 2014 for evading $15.58 million in taxes. Shakira immediately rejected for an out-of-court settlement which proved that she was guilty.
NBC News reported in July 2023 that Shakira was facing yet another case of alleged tax fraud. The report claimed in the complaint that Shakira lied to the Spanish Tax Office about her income taxes and assets in 2018. A court in Barcelona revealed that they are working with prosecutors to explore the potential cases of tax fraud committed by Shakira in 2018.

For the initial tax evasion case a punishment of eight-year prison sentence and a fine of $25.5 million was reported. Spanish authorities state that from 2012 to 2014 she was residing in Spain and should have paid taxes but her legal team argues by saying her full-time residency in Spain began from 2015 onwards.
Shakira’s name was also involved in the “Pandora Papers” scandal which exposed public figures who were connected to offshore assets. Spain has always taken a strong stance regarding tax evasion as they did not let go of even Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo so easily. Her ex-partner Pique was even forced to pay $2.24 million to the tax office.
