La Liga side Villarreal CF has parted ways with head coach Quique Setién just after the first four games of the season. This has made the Spaniards the first to get sacked this season.
The club faced three losses and one win in the first four matches. Their latest defeat was against Cádiz for a scoreline of 3-1 on Friday. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the poor start of the season was the reason behind Setin’s asking by the Yellow Submarines.
The club reportedly confirmed the manager’s sacking on Tuesday. Villereal sporting director Miguel Ángel Tena will take the interim charge while the board looks for a new manager.

Former Barcelona and Real Betis coach Setién replaced former Arsenal manager Unai Emery at Villarreal in October 2022. During the tenure of the 64-year-old, the club went on to win 18 and lose 15 matches.
The club has reportedly stated that a change is needed to turn around an “important season” as they are set to compete in the Europa League. They will be facing Panathinaikos, Maccabi Haifa, and Rennes during the group stages of the competition.
Quique Setién’s managerial career over the years
Quique Setién has been one of the top managers in La Liga over the years. The manager has recently been sacked by Villareal after a poor start that saw them lose three and win one out of the first four matches in the 2023–24 season.
The Spaniard started his career as the Head of Operations of La Liga2 club Real Racing Santander. But in 2001, he was appointed as the manager of the club. However, his tenure only lasted until the end of the season, as both parties parted ways on June 30, 2002. That season, under the Spaniard, the club ranked second in the league with 71 points in 42 matches.
The manager has coached around 10 teams, which includes two national teams. The 64-year-old manager has managed clubs like FC Barcelona and Real Betis. He managed Barca for 25 matches. In the season he joined, 2019–20, Barca finished second in the league with 82 points in 38 games.

The manager’s longest tenure was with the Primera division club, CD Lugo. He managed the club for six long years, as the club played almost 258 games under his management.
His last venture was with Villareal CF. He took over the hot seat from Unai Emery, who left the spot to join Premier League side Aston Villa. Under Setien’s guidance, the yellow submarines stood fifth in La Liga with 64 points. The club has also qualified for the UEFA Europa League.
